Tom's Thumb - Again

03/19/2018

We have done Tom's Thumb hike before but it has been a while so we figured we should go again.

The rock formations are just amazing, it is only about 25 minutes from the house, and the weather is great. Go while the going is good.

Last time we hiked this we drove over rough dirt roads to a make-shift parking area. Now it is part of the Sonoran Conservancy so there is a paved road in, directional signs, huge parking lot with facilities. Progress I guess.

The hike is only a little over 4 miles round trip but the first 1.6 miles or so has an elevation gain of 1236 feet. So basically my lungs hate me going up and my knees hate me going down. Totally worth all the grumbling

The Sonoran Conservancy has had the foresight to save acres and acres of great hikes and places.

We see faces in lots of the rocks

Not sure what it is a face of but there are lips, a nose, and a head.

And here we are at the base of Tom's Thumb. Usually folks are climbing it but not today

Younger folks with steadier legs like to climb on the rocks for a great view

Ah yes. I remember when I did that, back when I had good knees, a better sense of balance and a lack of concern I could die.
